yeah, i never really got into dbus, but as it is made for inter programm communication, it is the cleanest aproach.

For my Ubuntu 11.10 with Rhythmbox 2.9.1 i have to use:

env DISPLAY=:0.0 dbus-send –type=method_call –dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.Next

And in Rhythmbox the plug-in MPRIS D-Bus interface has to be enabled.

@JamesIsIn: Yes, xorg does not know what display to use, you can add ‘DISPLAY=:0.0 ‘ in front to the command to tell xorg this, you just should take care if you have multiple displays to adjust a little…

If I am already ssh’d into a machine, using commands like rhythmbox-client –next do not work (they give an x-11 error). How can I work around that? I don’t get that error if I issue the same command on the machine locally.

@jose-blug: actually programming is quite simple and entertaining, there tutorials how to write a ping-pong game in a day. Most people (me for ex.) get just confused by the mass of library that you can use and each is a little different …
If you use allegro library with c++ you can have a 100 liner ping-pong game that you can extent very easy to whatever you imagine
